I Messed Up My Aweber List

I don’t know how many of you use Aweber or if you’re really good with it, but I’m still learning. I set it up initially with this blog, so all of my list subscribers and messages have gone into the same section. Then last year, when I set up my subscriber list for my niche research packs, I created my opt-in boxes in a new researchpacks section and everything worked fine.

But for some reason, when I set up my Dare to Get Personal site for this challenge, I spaced somewhere, but what I thought was going to be helpful, turned out to be a pain in the ass. So let me see if I can keep you from running into the same issue.

I created to opt in boxes for my new site. I put one of them up in the right sidebar, which shows up on every page. The other one I actually insert into the bottom of each post, so that people see it when they get done reading and they don’t have to scroll all the way back up to the topic they like to subscribe to get future posts.

Well, for convenience sake, I decided to create them in my debij section. My thoughts were that all my messages and lists would be on one page so I wouldn’t have to toggle from one to another.

Bad idea!

Luckily I caught it with only 16 new subscribers, but by setting up my opt in forms for my Dare To Get Personal site in the same place that I set up my opt in forms for my Debi J’s blog site, everyone who opted in over at Dare to Get Personal ended up on my day Debi J’s blog list. That’s not what you want to happen when you’re sending out different messages to different people based on what THEY signed themselves up for.

So I sent out a broadcast message to my 16 new subscribers apologizing, explaining what I did and letting them know that if they would like to be on the right list and keep receiving notes from me, that they should go over to my Dare to Get Personal blog and sign up again. I also included a link to the blog to make it very easy for them to do that… That’s important.

FYI… Do NOT panic if you do something like this as you’re learning. There IS a way to segment out specific people from each list. So, until everyone signs up again over at my new blog, I have the ability to send my e-mails to just that part of my main list. Yay!

  1. Hi Debi

Ah yes, good old Aweber …… it is giving me challenges. I’ve learnt how to do a broadcast message. Very simple. Need to improve, one step at a time.

Doing an opt in box for the bottom of my post is also on my list ……… it sounds more complicated than I’d like it to be – so I don’t just use the same one that I have up on the top right?!?!?! πŸ™

    1. You could I believe. The only reason I use a different one is so I can tell where more people are opting in… that whole tracking and testing thing. πŸ™‚

Not complicated though, especially if you set up your top one. Go back to Aweber, go to your Webforms area and create another one just like you did the first one, save it as a different name so you know the difference on the subscriber optin page (inspire optin top right vs inspire optin posts). Then, you know how you copied your code for the first one and pasted it into a widget on your right sidebar? Well, save this one somewhere handy in a notepad file (use notepad so it doesn’t change or add anything to the code). Then, each time you create a post for your blog and have it ready to publish, click on the “Text” tab of your WordPress post and scroll to the bottom. Then open your notepad file and then highlight and copy the line of code for the optin (if you misplace it you can always go back to Aweber and grab it again). Then scroll to the bottom of the post, paste the code, update the post, then go see if it’s showing up for you. Sometimes I’ve had to paste it more than once and I’m not sure why. But I’ve found that if I go to the bottom of my post on the “Visual” tab (where you always type up your posts) and press return 2 times before going to the “Text” tab, that it usually works without issues. Just be sure to update it while still on the text tab before clicking back on the visual tab. πŸ™‚

And if that’s really confusing, let me know and I’ll see if I can figure out this video recording software and record it. πŸ™‚

  2. @Tamsin,
Debi showed me how to do this and it worked first time. I had wrestled with it for days to no avail. It’s really easy once you know how.

I have issues with Aweber. No, not issues, just this paralyzing fear almost. I can make a list, and do a broadcast, but that’s about it.

Then Debi showed me how to use the javascript. btw I am typing in the dark. My granddaughter is asleep beside me, hogging the bed, and I’m trying to visit some blogs while I can. She’s about to push me out of the bed. I may have to let her have it. lol
