Success Factors

Their are certain traits one must possess in order to succeed in their own business. Doing what the boss tells you to do doesn’t require the same type of success factors as working for yourself. The question is, are those traits really what you think they might be?

In my own opinion and personal experience, I don’t think it’s as complicated as it seems.

Moe, from the Adsense 100K forum stated on a post that to succeed in this business of Internet Marketing, “you basically need to be too stubborn – or too dumb – to quit!”.

I couldn’t help but laugh because it took me back to a conversation I had with a friend of mine years ago. We were celebrating as a company, our first successful year in business. We’d gone from 12 of us to hundreds…from hiding our vehicles and avoiding foreclosures to multiple 6-figure incomes. It was a really great party for everyone.

I was talking with one of the co-founders of the company and he laughed about how the Leadership Council Members (the company’s top income earners) ranged from high-school dropouts (he quit school as a Sophomore) to college degree holders (I being one of the latter). He asked what I thought the difference was between those who fail and those who succeed since education didn’t appear to be a factor amongst us.

I thought about it and told him that it seemed as though people with less education didn’t seem to struggle or have the same up and downs as those of us with college degrees (I had a roller coaster ride to the top for sure). He said, “Well you seem pretty smart.” I told him that my education got in my way in regards to my business because we get taught in school how to do things the “right” way, what horrible things can happen if we DON’T do things the “right” way, and we learn that we can succeed OR fail. I told him that he dropped out and never learned that stuff so basically he was too “dumb” to realize that he even COULD fail!!

Now, don’t get me wrong. This man was far from dumb, but all joking aside, I think there’s some truth to the statement. Those of us who have learned that failure is a possibility, tend to get in our own way more often than those who haven’t.

When I met that man (let’s call him Bob), he was shy, quiet, and could barely put his first and last name together in the same sentence while introducing himself before a business presentation. When Bob started his business, he started working on himself, his mindset, his belief system…and he did what the people who were already successful told him to do.

Most of us have spent our lives doing that, but for someone else’s financial benefit. We walk into a new job with a new boss, new systems, new rules…and we follow the bosses directions if we want to succeed in the job.

Business isn’t any different.

Within two years of his starting his own business, Bob was hosting business calls, conducting business presentations for hundreds, and training thousands of people from stage on how to be successful in their own business.

So in regards to the success factors required to do what you want to in your own business from a financial standpoint, just keep in mind that old-fashioned stubborness and stupidity might just go a long way!

  1. It’s True! When I first started Strategic Services in 1987 I was simply ‘too dumb’ to realize that you shouldn’t open a new business with only $2,000 investment, and nothing else to live on but the income of your new venture!!!

Same with IM – I was ‘too dumb’ to realize that very few people ever make more than a total of about $50 online, no matter how many years they are banging away at it.

Luck DOES play a part… it definitely can help or hinder you when you do or don’t have doors opening to you, or expertise suddenly made available to assist you, or just a good old fashioned ‘lucky break’ that gets you over the hump.

But knowing too much is definitely a hindrance that makes to many of us freeze on the spot instead of the classic – “Just Do It!” approach
